Final Paper

It’s quite funny doing this project just as my little sister is finishing up her senior year at a local high school. Even with all of my help, we are barely keeping up with all of her college things she has to do before going there. She will be attending to ECU the next following fall semester. We have to set up her email for the school, make sure she has all of her shots, orientation, and many more such as dorms. At first, she was convinces that she had done everything that was on the ECU checklist. I went and double check and realized that she hasn’t done a single thing. When you get accepted to college, the school sends you a username and password to identify you as a student. Well she thought that was her email for the school which he had to set it up later. Preparing for college is not easy at all. It’s quite confusing especially if you are a first year student.
For my first mini project, I had my sister to help me out with it. Interviewing her about her years though the school and what she remember what she did to prepare for college. I remember when she was in her junior year of high school, I told her to take the SAT and don’t wait like I did until my senior year. She had the opportunity to take the SAT twice which she scored a bit better on her second try. She helped and listed things that she could remember doing and what her adviser was telling her.

Thinking about the first project, this was a general guide line to go to a university college. And then I thought about it. Do you have to go to a university college? What if I don’t have the money? What if I don’t get accepted? For my second project, I talked about having other choices. You don’t have to go to a university college right out of high school. In 1979, only 49 percent of students headed to either a two-year or four-year college right after high school, but that jumped to a high of 70 percent in 2009 (Dwyer). More and more students are going to college but are they making the right decision? The project is showing students has more than more way of going to college. Going to college is never too late.

For my final project, I decided to talk about my last mini project which was about choosing community college over University College. Who am I talking to? I am talking to students who are first in their family to go to college. College can be very overwhelming for new and young students. Filing for scholarship or school could be very hard. The advantage of going to a community college first is that the school is much smaller, saved more money, and also guarantees to get in.

A much smaller school means more face to face interaction. Students are more use to this because they just got out of high school. In university, the classroom is much larger. Some class can have over fifty students to hundreds. It’s much harder to ask question and hear the professor talking. Sometimes you just can’t keep up with the speed of the professor.

According to my reading, a father of a recent community college grad noted, "If we had sent our daughter to UCLA directly out of high school, we would have spent about $56,000 to get her through to her junior year. She will be entering UCLA as a junior in the fall, and we only spent around $3,000. Going to a community college allowed her to work and save for two years and afforded her the time to apply for scholarships and grants to offset the cost of her remaining two years of college"(Bueno).

Now, colleges are harder to get in. You’re losing fifty to hundreds of dollar for the college application fee and not knowing if you are going to be accepted. The fear of being rejected and not knowing if you are going to college the very next year is frustrating. Community college is a guarantee to get in.

I believed that they the school environment is everything to the student. If they feel good about belonging to a school, they would preform better as a student. Making the right choice and choosing the right college is crucial for success. From my own experiences, I made bad decision which had a bad outcome. The first school I enrolled to, I didn't like it. Spend two years there and it was  a total waste of time and money. I was blinded by everyone in my family who wanted for me to go to a university. I don't blame them but it was my fault. Not seeing what I really want or seeing what's out there for me. I want students to learn from my mistakes. I want them to know that there are other ways of getting into college. Different paths that one can take and can still end up where they want to be.

Final Paper

Unfinish

For my final project, I decided to talk about my last mini project which was about choosing community college over University College. Who am I talking to?  This is my rough draft for right now. What else could I write or talk about?

Mini project

For the mini project, I decided to do college readiness. The purpose of this project was to help and guide students who needed help. I focused more on individuals who are the first one in their family to go to college. I know that not a lot of parents were given a chance to go to college. So it's hard for the parents to help their kids out on such things as financial aid and other documents. The project was very simple and easy to follow. But there are still some points that I couldn't cover.

Study habits

Back in high school, I really never have to study for my test. Either I look at the notes really quickly or just remember things the teacher said the day before the test. People will later ask me how long I study for the test. My friends will be suprise when I say that I really didn't study for the test at all. Then later they would tell me that I was very smart and didn't have to study for my test. To tell you the truth, it's not really being smart. In high school, it's more of taking in information over and over again and just putting it back on a peice of paper. There is really no critical thinking involved. Going to college, I thought that the same study habit was going to work. Boy was I wrong. The first test for my biology test was not pretty. I learn quickly that I was going to have to put in some time to study for my other test. I had to find a new study habit for college. I wish I has my friend study habit. He could study for hours and remember things word for word. I can't do this because I really get distracted really easily. So my new way for studing for college was to study for 30 minutes to a hour and then rest a bit and then study again. My friend get really stress out when it comes to test. I think that sometimes he over study for the test. By the time he gets to the test, he would either doubt himself or forgets what he study. So my advise to all high school students is to find a healthy study habit and get use to it. Because if you didn't have to study for high school, you will defiently study for college. And don't over study. Stress will get the best out of you.

I don't really know what to write about so I decided to write about what had happen to me and why I haven't been to class lately. I have a bulging disk/slip disk which hurts really bad and make me almost unmoveable. I can barely sit down. About three years ago, I was playing football for my high school. It happen during weight lifting class. For some reason that day, I decided not to stretch and decided to do some heavy squat. My friend had on 315 lbs and I got under the bar and started to squat. After the 4th one, I felt something shot right throught my back down towards my leg. I rack the bar and went and say down. Thinking nothing of it, I went on did my daily routine. It wasn't hurting so I though I just needed to stretch it. Well after half of the season of football, a sharp pain when down my back and I couldn't move. I was just walking to class when this happen. This pain now is on and off. I don't know when it's going to happen again and then it happen again three weeks ago. I been in the bed for almost two weeks. Can't move, walk, or do anything. I was almost like a vegetable. Moral of the story, stretch first before doing anything heavy.

Are you ready for college?

When I was a senior in college, I was so ready to get out and go into the world of college. But what I didn't know was that I wasn't even barely ready for college. I mean I send in all of my application and took all of my test that was required. I never thought of not getting accepted. Turns out that the three school that I applied to only one accepted me which was in the Spring semester. I didn't like that so I decided to applied for another school. Long story short, I went to a private university which I hated it. Private school which equals expensive tuition. In high school, I would like for a change for which students are to be more aware of college. There should have a class for 30 minutes once a week to where students are allowed to ask question about college. Not just university but as well as community college. Ask question about financial aid, college applications, and other forums that are needed.

Heros vs Villain

During last class, we were put into our writing group and was to talk about the movies and tv show we all know. To say the least, I knew some tv shows that guys are supposed to know about or last seen. Because of my little sister, these movies or tv show was at least seen once or at least heard of by me. This experience was quite funny. Anyways, we had to figure out who was the hero and who was the villain. We figure out that most of the hero was that main character and the villain was the secondary character. According to the movie "The Blindside," the hero will be the mother who save Big Mike. And the antagonist would be the gang that he first hang out with. He learned a new sport and got a big scholarship to the college of Mississippi. This shows the hardship of the main character has to suffered and all of the choices he has to make.
